New broncolor softboxes for still life and product photography

The new generation of broncolor softboxes was designed to provide photographers with very versatile light characteristics.

The sizes range from 35 x 60 cm up to 120 x 180 cm. We offer 6 rectangular and square softboxes, one narrow striplite shaped box and two octaboxes with diameters of 75 and 150 cm.

Regarding the light quality of our softboxes, we went one step further than everyone else. We wanted the illumination of our softboxes to be absolutely even and very sharply edged – so they could also be used in still life photography without any restrictions. Even highly reflective surfaces such as chrome, plastic or jewelry can now be lit with softboxes. To test these aspects of quality, we first of all shoot the front diffuser of our softboxes. Many softboxes on the market would look like this:

The reason is the low quality diffuser: The optical density is too low and the structure of the weave is clearly visible. You do not want this cross reflecting on your shiny objects!

The new broncolor softboxes have a very homogeniously lit front diffuser:

If you want to check your own softbox, make sure you do not overexpose the picture. Once completely white, every softbox looks good. Shoot it (bright) grey and you will see, what is going on.

The sharp edges of our softboxes are achieved with a 4 cm black frame around the third (optionally available) diffuser. Compare the edges of these two softboxes : broncolor on the left, a competitor’s box on the right.

To achieve the perfect illumination, we combine up to three diffusers. Therefore we had to control the color consistency very precisely. All materials (speedring, reflector, diffuser) do not influence the color temperature at all – even when used in triple layers. The perfect color control of broncolor power packs is not affected.

To check all these aspects of light quality, I shot a black helmet with large reflective parts. A shift in color temperature would immediately be visible as well as an uneven illumination.

The set up of my lights:

The final result:

This short video shows you, how I set up the four individual lights:

1. The Octabox 150 behind the helmet.
2. A black flag between the helmet and the Octabox 150.
3. Positioning the Striplite from the left side.
4. A large Softbox from the right side of the camera to show the metallic plate (not visible in the video)
5. A small and angled Softbox from the right side to show the forms and bring more details.

As the video is produced with the modelling lights, some lights look redish. But you can see in the final shot, all flashes are very acurate in color.

The new broncolor softboxes – very versatile and precise enough even for still life and product photography.

2. One pack for all your needs:

1200 ws of power, a range of up to 9 f-stops, absolute color stability and consistency across the entire power range due to the broncolor ECTC technology, speed mode, RFS2 flash triggering, and flash times down to 1/20,000s makes the Move 1200L a powerful system for any photographic application – indoors and outdoors, and wherever life takes you. With the Move pack you get the fastest flash duration from 4.7watts to 65watts, so you have much more latitude to adjust your settings to your situation.  The pack is also completely asymmetrical over two lamp connections, which means that you can have one head at the absolute lowest power setting and the other at the top of the power range.

3. Lithium Power:

The Move is equipped with broncolor’s proven Lithium system LiFEPo4 with integrated battery status, which ensures long periods of use, low weight, and up to 4,000 recharging cycles. The battery is designed so that after a day it cuts off its own connection to stop discharging, so you can leave the pack unattended for a year, come back to it and push the battery indication button (which gives you a visual read out of the total charge of the unit without having to turn the pack on), and the battery will read the same charge as it did a year ago when you left it.

4. Para 88: A true parabolic:

The broncolor Para 88 joins the family of parabolic reflectors that include: the Para 170 FB, 220 FB and 330 FB. At 88 cm wide, the Para 88 is perfect for outdoor shootings and smaller studios where you don’t want to sacrifice light quality but need a smaller reflector to do the job.

5. Light and compact:

Weighing in at an incredible 13.7 lbs, the Move 1200 L is the ultimate indoor/outdoor power pack. The Para weighs in at 6.2 lbs, which makes it easier than ever to travel with all your essentials.

6. Para 88: Reflector with focusing system:

Despite its compact dimensions, the Para 88 can fulfill the need for a myriad of individual lighting scenarios. Similar to its Para family, the 88 can be used with a focusing system from front. However, what makes the new 88 distinctive is that it can also be used from behind with the broncolor bayonet; subsequently, the light may be mounted either facing outward toward the subject or reverse mounted to take full advantage of the parabolic shape of the reflector. This permits the mounting of a Pulso mount strobe head, Kobold DW 200, DW 400 head), or, with “adapter D” it can be fitted to broncolor continuous lights F200 and F400.

7. Para 88 – an independent reflector:

A unique feature of the Para 88 is that it can be used as an individual reflector. It can be used with both strobes and continuous lighting as a diffused light source or a directional light source. The inwardly directed light produced gives shadows, extra sharpness and the fraction of scatter can be increased to reduce contrast. Additionally, it can be used with an array of diffusers or light grids. The Para 88, therefore, becomes a creative, light shaping tool.

8. Outdoor Trolley Backpack:

This new backpack is an essential tool for the photographer on-the-run. It fits all necessary items from the kit and resembles a luggage with wheels and a collapsible handlebar. A soft protecting case is also included solely for protecting the power pack.

9. MobiLED – innovation:

This daylight balanced 30 W LED modeling lamp gives you even more flexibility. It’s compact, lightweight and energy efficient. Because of the bayonet locking device, the MobiLED is compatible with the entire range of broncolor light shapers and accessories.

10. Continuous Lighting:  And now, with the Move’s continuous lighting capability, and 5500K color temperature, the MobiLED and Move can be used for film sequences, and does so continuously for more than two hours!

New broncolor Para 88 adapter for Profoto lights

The Para 88 reflector is now more adaptable than ever. Broncolor has announced a new accessory for the popular Para 88 reflector – the Profoto adapter, which mounts Profoto lights into the inside of the Para.  Because of the growing demand for the Para 88 in all applications, broncolor has enabled its use with Profoto lamps; this allows Profoto users an easy path of introduction into the broncolor line. With the use of only one screw, the adapter is easily fastened and mounted to the focusing system.

The Profoto adapter is now available. For more information, contact us.

Featured: Foba’s Cable-Catcher

Manufactured by Foba, the BALTE and BALPE are universal quick-release plates that feature a cable-lock – a simple yet important innovation.   You won’t need to worry about cables being yanked from your camera, damage to ports or missed shots from pulled cables.

Whether your camera is attached to a tripod, or handheld, the 2 channels on the plate’s body snap the cables in place and tuck it neatly between the plate and your camera’s body.

Both BALTE and BALPE  (1/4 inch screw, 3/8 inch screw, respectively) are made for larger DSLR or medium format cameras, the specially designed plates are universal and will work with Arca-Swiss-style heads for a steadfast connection.   The plate fits ball heads such as: Foba M-1, M-2 or Mini Superball and the original Foba Superball with quick release mount.

The concept is simple: the protective “cable-catching” feature is  two channels cut into its aluminum body.   There are  two channel sizes to ensure compatibility with USB, Firewire 400 and 800. Three rubber pads on the plate ensure the tightest connection to your camera and provide a buffer between the two.

Manufactured to the highest quality, these QR plates are a perfect addition to your kit.

Broncolor: The Light Video Series: Para FB

True to its name, the broncolor Para is a highly efficient parabolic reflector. It can be used as a single light source or a complete lighting system. In the “Para FB” video segment by Amber Gray and Julian Bernstein, 5 sizes are featured : the Para 170 FB, Para 220 FB, Para 220 Soft FB, Para 330 FB, and Kobold 220. The newest Para 88 is not featured in this video, but is still part of the ever-growing Para family.

The Para 330 is broncolor’s largest Para: it is perfect for lighting and enveloping an entire studio. The 220 FB and 220 soft are large enough to produce consistent light even at distances of 5 to 8 meters. Both the 330 and 220 FB versions can be completely defocused. The Para 170 is one of the smallest Paras, with a slightly more aggressive light.

With 24 segments that make up its parabola, the Para creates a cloud of light that offers consistent illumination. The reflector allows for high light output, focusing with a focus bracket, and adjustment of light angle, which directly influences the character of the light. The importance of this, however, is the amount of time it saves in post-production and retouching. Because it is a significantly flattering light (especially for fashion), skin tones appear beautifully textured and soft.

Aluminum and carbon or fiberglass (for the 170) makes up the composition; it makes the Para incredibly lightweight despite its size. A great advantage of the broncolor Para is that only one person is needed to open up, focus and close the reflector. In this video, Julian and Amber show how to open the Para, install the ringflash and adapter plate (for Kobold HMIs), and how to focus the Para as well.
