ROCK by TIMEZAC
For this shoot, my creative direction was to capture a model against a dramatic coastal backdrop with a subtle high fashion feel. The location was an amazing rocky beach in Rancho Palos Verdes with a small cluster of very dark rocks that made for the perfect backdrop. The first look was a leather corset from Alexander McQueen paired with a crow feather collar. I felt that this combination would establish a powerful captivating contrast with the location & set the mood. The second look, I incorporated a strand leather shirt that added an interesting element of movement into the shot. For the third look, I wanted a softer mood in terms of wardrobe to contrast the crashing waves on the rocky beach. I opted for a simple black sweater complimented by silver bracelets.
In terms of equipment, I used a Hasselblad H4D-40 with the HC 50-110mm lens. As for lighting, I used a single light & modifier. The battery powered Siros 800L flash unit along with the Para 133 parabolic umbrella. The pair was a dynamic duo with unrivaled maneuverability & simplicity. Moving from one location to another, I had freedom of placement & ease of use (especially the quick setup time) that isn’t possible with other flash systems.
My goal for the lighting aesthetic was to have a slightly softer feel to the light quality without sacrificing contrast (i.e. looking too flat). I mainly used the Para’s focusing tube in the mid-way position, which is ideal to get that kind of light. We shot during late morning (11am) with minimal cloud coverage, so we had strong direct sunlight to work with. Nonetheless, the combination of a leaf shutter lens and a powerful strobe made it effortless to overpower the sun & achieve my signature look (underexposing ambient light). Harsh sunlight usually works against you, especially if you’re trying to achieve a softer light aesthetic. I mainly shot at 320-500/sec shutter speed to keep the ambient light under control.
The lighting combo really made it hassle free to achieve my artistic vision with ease and most importantly, exquisite quality.
